About WUI
WUI runs global programs for usable, accessible, human-centered technology and services.
World Usability Initiative builds on the global foundation of World Usability Day and turns awareness into coordinated action across education, recognition, convening, partnerships, and public-interest work.
Our story
From a global day to an organization for sustained action.
World Usability Day showed that usability can be a global movement. Since 2005, communities around the world have gathered around the idea that technology, products, and services should be easier to access, understand, and use.
WUI is the organization that runs and stewards programs such as World Usability Day, the WUI Design Challenge, World Usability Education, the Speaker Series, and related publication efforts. WUI is pronounced “we,” because usable systems are built together.
Positioning
Usability as public-interest infrastructure.
Human error is usually system failure.
When people struggle with a product, service, form, medical tool, education platform, civic system, or AI system, WUI asks whether the system was designed with real human behavior in mind.
Access is not enough. Use matters.
A service can technically exist and still fail people if it is confusing, intimidating, inaccessible, culturally mismatched, or designed around institutional assumptions.
Global problems require local understanding.
WUI’s work depends on regional knowledge, language, cultural context, and people close to the problems being addressed.
Visibility creates capacity.
Events, awards, education, publications, and partnerships invite people in, teach them, connect them, elevate their work, and mobilize them toward impact.
How WUI works
WUI is a coordinator, convener, educator, recognizer, incubator, and advocate.
WUI does not exist to be a consultancy. It exists to coordinate a global field, convene the right partners, raise the standard of practice, build capacity, and make human-centered design available to high-impact public-interest work.
- Convene experts, communities, institutions, and partners.
- Educate through resources, curricula, talks, books, and learning projects.
- Recognize strong human-centered design through awards and public visibility.
- Incubate projects, toolkits, templates, case studies, and repeatable models.
- Influence standards, policy conversations, and global development work.
Leadership
Working board, ambassadors, committees, and initiative volunteers.
WUI is guided by an active board and supported by ambassadors, working committees, and initiative volunteers. The Board provides strategic oversight while committees and ambassadors help advance active initiatives and extend WUI’s reach.
